John Laidlaw, the managing director of the global composite hose manufacturer Dantec, has been named ‘Business Person of the Year’ at a prestigious regional business awards ceremony.
Mr Laidlaw picked up the title at the 2013 Wirral Business Awards, the business friendly civic borough where Dantec is based in the Liverpool City Region of the United Kingdom.
The judges paid tribute to Mr Laidlaw’s ‘tireless’ efforts to grow Dantec’s export market, presenting him with the award in front of 450 people, at a gala dinner at Birkenhead School.
BBC Radio Merseyside presenter and host Roger Phillips told the audience:
“John Laidlaw has transformed Moreton manufacturer Dantec. Acting as exports director for more than 10 years, before leading a management buy-out in 2011 and becoming managing director, John is one of Wirral’s most experienced international businessmen. In 2003 John unveiled a new strategy for the company to unleash its overseas potential after he identified it had saturated the UK market. Thanks to more than a decade of tirelessly travelling the world exports now account for 70pc of the company’s turnover. John’s appetite for growth remains undimmed as he continues to promote one of Wirral’s best manufacturers to all four corners of the globe. Over the last year he has kickstarted new sales campaigns in the United States, the Middle East, Europe and Asia. John Laidlaw is a true manufacturing champion, leading a very global ‘march of the makers’.”
Accepting the award Mr Laidlaw paid tribute to his team.
“We have worked immensely hard over many years to get the company to where it is today,” he said. “I would not be holding this award if it was not for the team and the efforts of the entire workforce. This is recognition for all our hard work and the terrific products we make that offer high quality at a good price.
“It is a big honour to win this title when there are so many talented business men and women on the Wirral. We will continue to drive our business forward, creating jobs today and in the future. Wirral is a fantastic place to have a business with great access to skilled workers, a robust supply chain and terrific transport links across the country and the world.”
Mr Laidlaw’s award was sponsored by River Professional Services. The awards also shortlisted Dantec in the exporter of the year category.
Dantec hoses are used for petrochemical, marine and industrial applications to transfer petrol, oil products, chemicals and liquefied gases.

The firm exports to more than 50 countries.
